The plants in my aviaries were kept under a wire basket to keep the birds off while the plants had a chance to establish themselves.
Learnt this this hard way, first couple of plants were stripped to nothing. Found that once the plants were approximately half a meter high
then they could survive the birds onslaught.
I found all of my finches to be equally guilty

I'll have a look and see if I can find a saltbush in Canberra.
My birds stripped the tea tree that used to be in there, then started on the bark once it was dead.
