Thanks Craig, mine just love mealworms, and they have a nice whistle.

Wiki's telling you fibs, here in Vic the dominate one is the chestnut flanked one(lateralis)and quite a few people, including myself breed or have bred them quite easily in a mixed collection of finches, using Danny's feeding ways.
They are quite cheap to buy at around $40-$50 a pair. Craig
Crocnshas,

You speak as if you line of silvereyes breeds freely in season, what size and layout of aviary do you keep them in? In pairs or colony?

Do you think they would breed in a 1.2m x 3m breeding flight with 2-3 pairs of suitable finches? What kind of layout would be required to do this if at all?

Cheers

Hi AB,I don't keep SE's anymore as i specialise in two species now in much smaller aviaries.
When i did have them, they were kept in a large 9m x 4m fully planted aviary with many different species of finches and a pr of crimsom chats, the latter had the same food requirements as silvereyes.
The silvereyes always nested in the dry bush with a huge amount of spider webs being used to construct the nest, each day i would get my twirling stick and search around the base boards of the house or side fences and garage and smear the webs on the out side of the wire where they were taken eagerly.
Mealworms / maggots and vinegar flies were used to raise the young as well as spiders(daddy long legs)which i also supplied when i could get them.
I only ever had one pair per aviary and don't know if they would breed in a colony as food competition could be a problem. Craig

Thanks Craig,

What Species are you specializing in now?

Craig,
you don't have to answer that, after a quick look around I think its clear what you keep. I admire your choices, definitely something to work towards.

Thanks for all your input to this thread.
