Hi,

A lot has happened this month. When the last newsletter went out, Australia was still a couple of days away from having its first COVID-19 death. Now we're in the midst of a pandemic and a nationwide shutdown.

Aviculture has been moderately impacted by the crisis. All of the bird sales, auctions, shows—and the long-awaited Finches 20—have been cancelled or postponed. It's also starting to get a little bit more difficult to source avicultural supplies.

As someone intimately involved in the pet industry, I must say that suppliers for perishable pet products would not be struggling to keep up with demand if people were buying their normal volumes. Please, please look out for your fellow finch breeder by resisting the urge to panic buy.

On a more positive note, the extra time at home since the country shut down has meant a lot of keepers have more time to tend to their aviaries. Right now, my aviaries are the cleanest they've ever been, I'm growing enough leafy greens and seeding grasses to feed an army of finches, and the birds are breeding in great numbers.

Until the next newsletter; stay safe and healthy!

Getting started with Australian fig parrots
Not finch related; but many of our members like to dabble in some other bird varieties.

Fig parrots are a family of five species found in the tropical northern parts of Australia and South-East Asia. They live almost exclusively in rainforests, where they feed on fruits, berries, insects, and flowers. As their name suggests, native figs form an important part of their diet; and anyone wishing to keep one in captivity must have access to a steady supply of them.
