Up here Sep/Oct are usually the very dry months

Chestnuts will gather in huge flocks . . and if a regular food supply (such as someone who feels sorry for them) is found you could literally throw a blanket over a thousand of them

When the storms come and the seeding grasses do what seeding grasses do, the flocks disperse

It's an annual cycle
