Very pleased to have two WEs fledge this morning. Both crashed around the aviary for a while but seem to be strong and flying okay. First real (non-domesticated) finches I have bred.

Cheers Ian

Well done Ian. What live food have you been offering to the parents?

Thanks for the well wishes. Bgould, they had white-ants, bit never really got stuck into them. Strangely they were always first into the fresh dry seed every morning.

Cheers Ian

Well done on the breeding success!
My WE's also hardly touch livefood, they are offered mealworms and maggots, I find they are really big on grit when they are nesting, spending forever at the tray and also seeding grasses.
I have a pair nesting on the ground at present in -5 degree nights!

Had some bad luck with this lot. One of the young disappeared about a week after fledging. More unfortunate and frustrating, the hen escaped yesterday. I didn't realise she was in the safety cage with me... I'm guttered and so pissed off with myself.

A few ups and downs with my other pair, found a tossed chick 3 or 4 days ago, looked to be a week off fledging bit this morning one chick had flown the nest.

Cheers Ian
