Hi all,
I've lined up a pair of plumheads for the sale (day after tomorrow!!! YAAAAYYYYY!!!!!!!!) and was wondering if anyone has any special tips on how to breed these guys? I know they live lots of greens and some L/F.
Thanks!

Apart from what you have said it takes them a while to bond, If you loose one and get a replacement it takes ages for them to decide to go to nest I have found.

I have a pair and they breed like mad - have just fledged 4 young and I have others in my holding aviary. I got my pair about 2 years ago and I did lose the original hen and had some trouble finding a replacement. However I recently ended up selling about 10 to a dealer because in Sydney there now seems to be millions about.
The aviary mine are in is supplied with termites daily and I've never seen the plumheads go for them - they do love sprouted seed and of course leb cucumber.
Great birds and never bother anybody else!

thanks guys :D
that's interesting buzz... I'm getting a young pair from a friend of mine... so they could potentially take a few seasons just to pair up??

G'day,

How do the Plumheads go in Canberra's winter? Do you have an enclosed avairy or are they exposed to the cold nights?

Should be ok in cold climate. I've seen them near Inverell in the wild in Winter not far from snow.
Not usually tolerant of nest inspections so give them a little space when they nest. Mine have taken livefood whilst feeding young & can't say I've ever had any trouble with compatable pairs - usually gone to nest as quickly as any other finch once they're mature.

We have lots of plumhead breeders in canberra, and therefore a good supply of baby and fresh stock plumheads :)
