If this bird is a cock then why is his song so broken??? And he shows no interest in the hen but shows interest in the nest???

He fights with the hen through the wire. I have had to but a board between them and when together he chases her AWAY from the nest???

If this is a cock bird just not ready to breed then why is it showing interest in the nest? He sits in it???

Here is a link to a website on sexing goldfinches and it looks very similar to the hens in those pics. esp the red from the bottom of the eye to below the chin.

Compare my pics of the bird to the ones in these pics and you will see what i mean

They are much better photos, Judging by those I'd bet its a hen bird. As for the singing I had a Java hen that sang a very poor rendition of the males song.

Im thinking a cock bird for these reasons.Third photo down shows picture of top of head it looks quite dark. Also the black whiskars around it's beak indicate cock. What is confusing me is the lack of depth in red the crown under it's beak.Keep observing them and give them lots of conditioning foods and wild seeds and see if they get intimate in any way like kissing. It is still early season in UK.Goldfinches are late breeders anyway.

From what i know you can't force breeding upon birds if it is meant to be it will happen.I was looking for answers not long ago about my goldfinch cock not singing much or minimal. One day I heard a sharp loud burst of song it got my attention as it was odd.I thought I had a wild or escape visit thats how different. There he was with droopy wings and ready to jump.Next few days I had eggs.Take a look at this clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIL6nLbE ... re=related" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; at the start it looks like the cock want's to fight and gives the canary rude body language and then you can witness coupling. :? My advice they need time to get to know each other.Don't be to concerned about singing it will improve with time and confidence. It's an exciting time of year for you best of luck!

Hiya. my bird shows the aggressive boby language like this in video. But no singing. His beek also likes like the one in the video. My cock bird will chase the hen until they fight in mid air. flying around each other in air and trying to pull feathers. mainly him.

They each have a nest in both sides of the cage. *when seperate* and the cock is playing with the bedding and sitting in it. Looking like its nest building. When i put him in with her, or her in with him it dont really matter which. you get some serious growling and fighting in mid air and chasing about. I cant put wire between them because they beek fence through it and growl at each other. How do i let them get to no each other if they fight when in together or there is wire between them?

Both seem to be sitting in their own nests at the moment. If he seems to be eager to nest, why is he so evil to her? that video you sent me via pm. Thats the lvl of violence he shows her without the singing.

How can i pair them up if i cant even but a wire devide in with them

I am not sure if i can help you but i can suggest if you haven't already ask the question on this forum that is closer to you and deals with european birds and have lot of experts on board. It is http://www.nativebirds.co.uk/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; .There is loads of info and worth keeping an eye on.One thing you say is they each have their own nest in their respective corners.Goldfinches get protective of their nesting sites and become aggresive and defensive around it.If you remove the nests altogether and give them a fresh start and when you see the hen is ready and there looks to be a bond only then introduce the nest or nests. The key is the hen.The cock bird usually comes into breeding condition before hen and there lies a problem aswell. They say the key to breeding these birds is the hen.If she is not right or ready it won't happen. As for singing I am sure if you seperate the cock bird in a remote cage away from the hen (several meters) he should sing like mad. It's like magic.
