this is how my goldfinches fight. with a nest and without. In with each other and through the wire

It looks like a hen to me.All the red blaze should extend to in back of ryr.the white appears to be suffused with brown.

If this bird is a cock then why is his song so broken??? And he shows no interest in the hen but shows interest in the nest???

He fights with the hen through the wire. I have had to but a board between them and when together he chases her AWAY from the nest???

If this is a cock bird just not ready to breed then why is it showing interest in the nest? He sits in it???

Here is a link to a website on sexing goldfinches and it looks very similar to the hens in those pics. esp the red from the bottom of the eye to below the chin.
