I own 2 pair of Mexican siskins (black hooded yellow siskin) and I'm trying to be a good breeder as only had 1 baby and brought a partner for her. I'm going to keep trying to breed them ,was wondering if i can manage a good breeding program and constantly get young. If i can breed the Mexican siskin is there any difference to breeding the red siskin? The little bits of information that I've got they sound nearly the same except for the hens are a bit more sensitive to the colder weather and they require more live food than the Mexican. Will be looking at breeding some in the next 3 years so any help wit this will be much appreciated .

Yellows are easier to breed than Reds. They will eat a wider range of foods and have heavier downed young so don't tend to get the same juvenile mortality which Reds often experience at the 9-10 day old mark where brooding stops. Don't really need live food at all if greens are varied & plentiful, but Yellows more inclined to eat insects if you provide them. Once reds reach adulthood they are tough as old boots & only breed as it warms up so cold is not an issue for adults.
