Moult to adult plumage

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone who breeds red faced pytilias could tell me how long before I would expect to see red feathers around the face of young cock birds after fledging. I have a couple that fledged about 7 weeks ago and coming out of the moult now but no red feathers on the face yet. I haven't kept or bred these before.

Thanks
Steve

Hi tony,

No answer through aff, but I had a young fledge about a month ago and after two weeks from fledging the odd red feather was noticeable on the face. I also recently purchased a couple of cocks which are fully coloured and only 4-5 months old. The breeder who supplied them said that ha can sex cocks by odd red feather on the face almost immediately after leaving the nest.

They are an attractive bird and so quiet.

Regards
Steve

Usually within a month of fledging young cocks will show some red spots at the same time as the grey coming through in other areas. Sorry, didn't notice this post earlier.
