Seen this Advertisment today....Is it legal to cross natives? if it isn't why doesnt NPWS do something? or are they a toothless tiger.. :think:

Golden Mantle rosella Is a subsecie of the Nominate Eastern Rosella.

And it's perfectly ok to cross Heck's Longtails with the yellow billed Longtail I suppose. Or the normal Masked grassfinch with the White eared Masked grassfinches etc,etc? :thumbdown:

FYI there are hybrids listed on the current NSW native list - http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/resou ... esList.pdf
I don't think there's anything official/legal to prevent hybrids of native species.

My understanding it is illegal to hybridise native species in Victoria or to house/pair birds together that could hybridise. It doesn't apply to subspecies as they are generally not listed individually on our schedules.

Someone with a better knowledge of the Vic Regulations than I, could expand.

Having been to Castle Hill sale several times it would appear that crossing everything that moves is common practice in NSW.
