There's an old piece of wisdom which says that birds in the wild only use hollow logs because there are no boxes available

And the footage showed that Swifts in the wild, had indeed successfully used boxes provided

While I am in no way questioning the good intentions of those involved in the project . . and wish it every success; there would be more 'bang for the buck' in positioning a couple of hundred boxes, rather than a couple of dozen chain-saw created hollows

Perhaps someone who is more computer savvy could provide a link to that segment
Here you go Arthur...... http://www.abc.net.au/7.30/content/2016/s4556245.htm

After viewing ABC "Catalyst" programme just now, it looks as though they did actually position 'a couple of hundred nest boxes'

And again VP  . . Can you provide the link

The other "Catalyst" segment . . regarding ticks causing anaphylactic reaction to red meat was also interesting, and a tad alarming, given that I used to pick up the odd tick or two, and in one case five, while servicing the larger planted aviaries during the dry parts of November / December

Excellent news about the nest boxs increasing Swift Parrot population. Now all they have to do is repeat the process on other islands off Tassie.

Such a pity that Catalyst has been axed by the ABC.

Has it been axed or just time off for the "silly season" from now to early new year?

I too think it is a top program

Unfortunately it has been axed.

Media Watch pinned it's demise on two Catalyst stories that were poorly received by the scientific community.

It was the best rating science show in the country so I don't see why they couldn't just fix the issues and keep it running. Such a waste.
