Did anyone attend the September meeting of the Avicultural Society of Australia on Wednesday 24th of Sep? Ken Moore spoke about 40 years of building aviaries accompanied by plenty of photos and a 20+ min video of his collection. Amazing set-up with his aviary complex covering more space than most suburban blocks of land! (I think it was 810m sq) The video showed a very inspiring collection of finches, pigeons, doves and softbills with some pheasants and ducks thrown in for good measure in two massive planted aviaries.

He had some good simple tips on mouse/rat proofing including running a collar of concrete around the perimeter of the aviary complex then crushed rock for another 30-40cm which is kept free of any weeds etc. Without a wall to dig up against past the crushed rock, the mice/rats don't seem to dig. Add plenty of bait and traps around the perimeter of the complex and 900mm high tin around the bottom of the aviaries, Ken has been able to hold off vermin.

Luke.
