Firstly, WELCOME to the AFF Andrew.
I have no idea of what native grasses are available in the Victor Harbour area, but suggest that you might procure a copy of "What Seeding Grass is That?".
This is a booklet listing 60 finch-friendly grasses and includes pictures of each for identification and a rating of nutritional value.
It is available from Richard Chilton at the Avicultural Society of South Australia for about $10, email: [email protected].

Hi Andrew,
In the West with similar climate to yours panic grasses grow well. I also have Old man saltbush and Creeeping Saltbush (Rhogodia Spinscens) in pots and rotate these as well as using the leaves to put in the aviary. You can also sprout millets etc in trays or pots and place in the aviary. Most plants in aviaries face threat of being stripped unless covered with mesh so rotating pots can be a good manoeuvre. I have bamboo in the large aviary as it gives good variation in perch size and shape. Finches also use it to nest in. It stays controllable with limited water

I live at Goolwa and collect Veldt grass seed heads daily for my Gouldians - they love them.
Was a little sparse over the summer but lots about again now - lucky we live near some vacant house blocks - so easy pickings
