Help please

My gouldians have 3 eggs that were laid around the 5/2. She had two on this day and went on to have two more. They were going great till I found dad dead in the cage yesterday morning. She had continued to sit on them until this afternoon when she hasn’t been near them for at least two hours that I have been home. Any tips please? Two eggs at least still have heart beats.

Do you have any other Gouldians you can foster them under? Any other finches of any kind you can use as fosters?

I had a hen whose mate left her for another, she sat on and hatched 2 eggs on her own, raised them on her own and there where a few times i thought she abandoned the eggs.

so if you can foster them good, if not ,she may pull it off on her own , its summer

I have had many instances where a single bird will raise a clutch from egg stage after losing a mate. A couple of hours off the nest is not a concern at this time of year.

Welcome Roony47 and I hope your Gouldian situation is now improved.

Gouldians are a bit tougher than they seem. I have one little hen that must run on Energisers as she not only raised a clutch of 5 by herself 2 years back (lost the cock bird to cat disturbance), but now goes around feeding everyone else’s chicks too. Best of luck in your future clutches.

any idea why the male died?

are they in an aviary or indoor cage? if an aviary, maybe a cat spooked them last night.

Sorry to hear that. Finch breeding can be heartbreaking sometimes
