Hi everyone,

I am Felipe “Philip” Caro Jr from the Philippines. I just bought 11 juvenile zebra finches of different mutations to mix with 5 normal zebras I have at home since a month ago. What I know about the species are what I have read in the internet.

It would really be a great help to get pointers from experienced hobbyists, as this will prevent me from committing newbies mistakes that may do harm to these finches.

Thank you.

Philip

Hi and welcome to the forum :)

basics for zebra finches and pretty much all Australian finches.
1. Feed them a good seed mix consisting of 2 parts finch mix and 1 part blue ribbon canary mix.
2. Make sure they have cuttlefish bone, mineral grit and an iodine mineral block at all times.
3. Make sure they have clean water every day.
4. Add a vitamin/ mineral supplement to their water each day. In hot weather only have the vitamin/ mineral supplement in the water for half a day then tip it out and replace with clean water only.
5. Make sure they get some fruit, vegetables and or green grass seeds each day. Make sure any food is free of chemicals like herbicide/ pesticide and animal waste.
6. Make sure they have a nest to sleep in at night, and plenty of grass to line the nest with. Normal cane nests are fine.
7. Keep them out of drafts, including air conditioner outlets.
8. Don't let them sit in the rain, especially at night.
9. Make sure they get some morning sun.
10. Keep them out of the kitchen and away from spicy foods being cooked, and don't let anyone smoke near them.
11. Don't use any bug sprays, hair spray, perfume, deodorant, paint, etc, near them.
