Just wondering how I can encourage my finches to use nests I have 2 pairs in 2 cages with a nest in each but for some reason they sleep on perches not in nests
Any advice would be helpful

What kind of finches are they? Many finches—perhaps even most finches—will only use nests when breeding.

I have two pairs zebra and goulian
In two separate cages
I have had problems with pest birds but I’m sure I’ve rectified that problem

I have both types and they do not generally sleep in nests. They just use them for breeding. If you have two pairs you need three nests, so each lady has a choice. Cages that are enclosed on at least two adjoining sides and the top are generally best for protection from flying pests. Enjoy.

Gouldians generally prefer a wooden box about 15/20cm square with a round entry hole that allows easy access. You can use the same for Zebs, but they will nest in practically anything. Breeding box/cages are excellent for pest protection, but generally only suitable for one pair of finches. (depending on if they are standard or double boxs) Enjoy.

Zebra finches sleep in nests at night but Gouldians don't.

Zebras will use any sort of complete nest, whereas Gouldians prefer hollow logs, bottle neck finch nests or breeding boxes.
Australian Finches will not use a cup shaped nest that canaries use.

Make sure you have lots of grass in the cage so they can build a nest, and the birds should do the rest.
