Hi everyone. While I have kept birds for most of my life, I have very limited knowledge on keeping and breeding finches.
Some tips on keeping a finch aviary would be very much appreciated!

Read the information on here about the birds you are keeping/intend to keep. Always remember to note where the poster is from. What is right for far north queensland will be somewhat different to what is right for south tassie, or over here on the WA coast. Though somethings remain a constant. Many things carry from one type of bird to another, so if in doubt ask questions. Lots of questions.
Are you building a custom avairy for finches or recycling an old avairy from a different type of bird?

I'm in the pretty early stages of building a custom aviary for some zebras. I've got a pretty good spot picked out for them so here's hoping it works out.

If you've keep other birds before then keeping finches should not be much different. Other than their size their needs remain much the same.
Zebra finches are a good first choice. Good personalities, communal and breed easily.
When building a finch aviary and keeping finches keep in mind predator protection and excluding rodents.

If you're looking for Zebra finches, Brookfield Produce on Brisbane's westside has heaps (I saw your location was Brisbane). What dimension is the aviary?

Zebs are one of the easiest and most interesting finches. There are many mutations if that is your interest. Priorities for the avairy would be the obvious ones. Face the avairy to the Northeast if possible, but north or east will work. For their morning sun. Make sure you have 600/700mm of rodent proofing above and below the ground so the pests don't get in. You probably do this for your other birds. Make sure to put at least one more nest than there are hens, so every lady gets a choice. Again you probably do this for your other birds. The aviary is 2.5m x 1.5m and about 1.8m tall. I've got ample wriggle-room to expand it while it's just a frame in case it turns out the aviary's too small.

Nice size avairy for a few Zebs, who will reward you with a few more Zebs.
