Hello I have just completed my Finch Aviary and was interested if anyone has been using solar to power down lights to warm their enclosed nest and roosting areas.
I have learnt a lot of excellent information from reading the posts of other members.
I live in the Dungog NSW area which does get cold during winter and have insulated my bird's sleeping area.

Hello Shane I have decided to hold off until late Spring before buying my birds.
I am looking at getting some Redheads, Double Bars at first as there are plenty in my local area. Maybe later some Longtails, Painted and Plumb Heads. When I was young I had them in my aviary in Sydney and enjoyed breeding them.
I have lots of mice and native rats here but have gone overboard with concrete and wire to keep them out.

Welcome to the forum. Red headed what's? With mice and rats from nearby bush it is essential to cover the 600/700cmfrom the ground with solid tin if not using rodent wire. Enjoy your finches when you get them.

I meant Red Browed Finches when I had them back in the 70's they were usually called Red Heads.

Thanks, I have placed two layers of rodent wire below and above broken bricks, glass etc then gravel. A concrete border moat also around frame work 600mm deep. Hopefully that will keep the little pests out.

Sounds like you have planned well. Now hope you can source birds. Good Luck.
