My Orange breasteds and Double bars have over the years been about 50/50, make their own nests with lengths of grass in brush and nesting in the smaller type nests I mentioned in my earlier answer in this post. While my canaries mix nesting in cup shaped receptacles, making their own cup nests in brush, and nesting in boxs. In that order of preference. Happy finch keeping.

You don't have to use nest boxes, a normal weaved nest with a roof will be fine. But you can peek into nest boxes any time without much disturbance.
Have a nice day!

Whatever nests you will be getting, make sure that it has a roof so the finches feel secure inside.

Though Canarys are split about 50/50 between those that like a covered nest and those that will not enter a covered nest.
