I noticed a pic on the web which claimed to be a Crimson/Star hybrid. Just wondering if anyone has ever bred one and if so are they fertile?

I have seen that hybrid and it has been recorded in the wild in Northern WA. Even though they are closely related genetically, as Neochmia phaeton for the Crimson and Neochmia ruficauda for the Star finch i would doubt it would be a fertile hybrid.
Most hybrids happen in aviaries due to unbalanced natural pairs of a species

Bred one about 30 years ago. Never tried it out to test fertility. The mother Star must have been a tart as they also produced a Star/Ruddy hybrid in a later clutch.

Either a 'ruddy' tart or a 'bloody' tart . .

Probably got her s.tar.t in a red light district

And . . even though she obviously had a fetish about shades of maroon, such behaviour is not that of a Queensland girl

Saw one today at Living Jungle, Ramsgate. Have some pictures to share but how do I post them.

It certainly looked a bit "scruffy" as I think it was half moulted. The picture really doesn't do it justice. I didn't make any inquiries as to price but I wonder why in the hell would a dealer take it on as it is more likely than not infertile. I reckon it was a donation with the other stars it was with but I did notice that a couple of the other birds were darker in colour but didn't have the characteristic long tail and red colouration. Could it be a cock bird and the hens did not carry the crimson gene so much? You can see in the second photo a much darker star than normal next to it.
