Hi again
Thanks for the replies on my last post but my confusion continues. So lately my canaries have been making a chattering sound that almost sounds like babies. They make it all day long. Does anyone know what this means? Also, I have provided several nesting cups in the aviary in different positions but they seem to prefer the enclosed wicker nests. Again, although I have several provided they have chosen 2 and both the so called pairs are squishing into the nest together! ( one pair in 1 nest, the other In the nest next door)They seem happy and there is no fighting. do male canaries ever sit in the nests?
I am beginning to suspect I have 4 females who have paired up and are trying to raise a family without a male. Would love some insight.

Contrary to popular belief, not all canaries prefer a cup nest. Have found they are equally likely to go for a closed nest. So I provide open tins and Budgie style boxs. This way all are happy. And if two choose the same box, which happens on rare occassions, there is room for all. Enjoy.

Grab the canary and hold them upside down. Gently blow air on the feathers between their legs and look at the cloaca (egg laying and pooping tube). On females the cloaca is small and only sticks up 1-2mm, on males the cloaca will stick up about 4-5mm. Male canaries have a proper whistle, females sometimes do a whistle but it is not the full on version that the males do.
Males will sometimes sit on eggs but normally it's the female that does the brooding.
