Hi Everyone,

I am noticing that my aviary roof is leaking and some of my nest boxes are starting to go soggy on the outside. I'm wondering if I should replace them, will this soggy-ness make bad bacteria or something develop in the nest?

Thanks
Aidan

What are the nests made of? Do they dry quickly? Are they getting wet once a week or daily? You need to begin by putting nests where they do not get wet.

Well, we've been having heavy storms non-stop for just over a week now, and I'm going to go and fix up the holes as soon as it stops raining. The boxes are already against the back wall of the flight section.

Thanks

Looks like they are made of MDF it will hold the water if it gets soaked. So like Gary says, take them out. Put them somewhere well out of the rain where the breeze can blow and they are able to drain, and they will be OK again in a few months. Putting nests against walls is easier, but not always the most waterproof. Best way to work out where to put nests is to stand in the avairy while it rains and observe the bits that are driest. Then put the nests there. (you may get soggy in the process) From what you are saying it sounds like the roof/wall joints are leaking? You may need to block the joints with some form of sealant or putty.

Screw a bit of corregated iron or tin on the roof of the boxes, might help....

Once they have dried out that could be a good idea, Noah.

Has the rain stopped? Are you able to stop the leaks?

Well, it's gone down to 60% today, but just to be sure, I'll wait until tomorrow to clog up the holes because it's only 30% chance of rain.

Thanks

I wish it would rain here. It's been about 5 months since we had rain. Even the Banksia trees are curling their leaves and dropping them :(
