Yeh don't use a globe like mine. Thats for keeping sick bird in my shed during winter where the temp stays below 5dec over night. I use 25-40Watt globe usually. Works very well inside.

thanks for the replies guys.
I had already bought online a 40w infrared bulb that i can screw into one of my spare desk lamps.

Will wait till it arrives then see how it goes.

Since the birds take up the entire height of the cage, I can't really place the light inside the cage, so I will have to place the light outside above the cage, but facing down towards the cage. Will this be ok?

What should be the minimum distance be before I cook the birds? Does a 40w get really hot?

thanks

if you wanted to put it above the cage,Put a thermometer in it and adjust the height of the lamp so the cage or area is about 26 to 29 degrees celcius. They are cheap at hardware stores. You could use a incadescent bulb while waiting for your globe. You will need to work out what made your bird sick in the first place also.

with the infrared globe make sure you use a ceramic holeder for the globe as it can melt the plastic ones. just to let you know

test it when you are home for atleast a few hours,To give it a chance to heat up.If it seems to hot try taking the reflective surround off.and try that.

I've received the light, and have placed it in above the cage shining into the side of the cage.

It just seems slightly too bright at night time. Here are a couple of pics. Please note that these pics actually turned out slightly brighter than in real life:

Is this a problem for the birds? I've noticed (now is close to 1am), and the birds are still quite active, whereas usually they'd be inside their basket sleeping by now.

Is a bit bright, would be better for a sick bird then nothing. Some here have thier birds in direct light in a hospital cage.My one has a tin baffle to allow the heat in but not the light.maybe you could have a baffle half way down the cage,So the bird can escape the light if it wants.
