Loosing finches to the winter

Only owning finches for the last 8 months and loosing a zebra (hen) after a really cold night in the hunter valley I can't think of any other reason to explain it is it a common thing and bedding in the nest boxes should be increased ?????

In winter always usually loose a bird or two. And it has been especially cold
