In the past two weeks I have lost a gouldian, grass finch and a cherry finch in what seems to be some kind of diaree. What bothers me most is that all three were females. Coincidence? Can it be prevented?

Hi Andre
Unless you know what caused the diarrhoea it's hard to suggest a preventative.
It could be coccidiosis ( bay cox would treat this), or a bacterial infection ( antibiotic depends on which bacteria is causing it) or a parasite such as cochlosoma or worms- both of which need different treatments.

Ideally take a bird to an avian vet for a post mortem; even having a feacal sample analysed may help.

There are lots of drugs you can try but I would hesitate to suggest one without a diagnosis.

Electrolytes in the water will help to rehydrate and replace lost electrolytes in any bird with diarrhoea but will not treat the cause.

Try to keep your floors dry and decrease stress levels in the aviary by providing lots of perching and hiding areas for the inhabitants.

Cheers and good luck
