Any ideas what this is please? Could I try and remove it with my finger nail? She is two years old & acts normally.

How long has she had the growth for?

It might be from air sack mites or too many hormones. Female budgies with too much estrogen can develop a growth on their cere but I don't know if finches have the same issue. They might.

Parasitic mites cause lumpy bits to grow on canaries. This is normally treated with Ivermectin, available from a vet.

If nobody else has any ideas then take her to a bird vet, (make sure the vet is a bird specialist and not just a standard vet) and see what they have to say.

Dave it is scaly mite of which painteds are prone to and very common. You can paint the area with moxidecton and place a drop on the bare skin on the back of the neck as well as one drop the bare skin in the pit under the wing. They will preen that area and will get some in the mouth but it wont hurt it. You can also smear vegetable oil on the infected area on the bill which will kill the mites by suffocation.
Treat all birds in the aviary and clean or replace perches and spray the whole aviary with coopex including birds that fly past and perched birds including perches. Hope that helps. Craig

If I dose the drinking & bath water, would that have any effect?
I am reluctant to stress her at the moment as we have quite a few days of 40+ temperatures.

add the treatment to their drinking water and don't chase them around if the temperature is over 30C.

Saw that SA was in the middle of a heat wave. Hope you all have a change to the moderate soon. Dose them through the water, and change all perches very early during the cooler part of the day.
