It sounds like they left the nest prematurely. Zebra finches sleep in a nest at night so make sure the little ones are in a nest at night. If they fledge early they won't be fully feathered and could get sick from cold weather.

Make sure the birds have a good seed mix. I used 2 parts finch mix and 1 part blue ribbon canary mix.
Make sure they have plenty of green feed, including green grass seeds, which are plentiful in late winter and spring.
Make sure they have clean water, mineral grit and cuttlebone at all times.

Make some egg biscuit for them each day. Boil an egg for 10 minutes. While the eggs is boiling, get 1 cup of cornflakes and put it in a paper or plastic bag. Use a rolling pin to crush the cornflakes. When the egg is boiled, remove the shell and crumble it up. You can put the egg shell in the aviary or on the garden. Put the boiled egg into a bowl and use a fork to crush it up, then mix the cornflakes with the egg and put the bowl of egg/ cornflakes in the cage for the birds. Remove food at the end of each day so it doesn't go off.

Where would I ‘harvest’ green grass seed from?

Native weeds that come up in your garden, and/or turn a corner of your garden/a number of pots into a bird seed garden by planting a handful of seed. If in the garden just pick the seed heads and feed out, if using pots put in the avairy till the seeds are eaten then take out again to regrow. Sometimes if your neighbours have more weeds than you and you get on you can offer to weed their garden if you know they dont spray it. In that case just pull up the whole weed and give to the birds, they will enjoy picking through the roots also.
