Hello there!

I wanted to know if the Hagen Tropican HP biscuits could be offered as food. The biscuits are big but my canaries love to chew on wood and on things so maybe they will have fun chewing on bigger pellets like the biscuits.

Like i would offer the HP diet when they are moulting and during winter.

Or do you think it’s way too big for canaries? I think they might have fun munching on bigger pellets and trick them into thinking it’s a treat

Let me know what you think!
Thank you!

Sorry never heard of them. Canaries are a very inquisitive bird that will try almost anything, but the best thing is to offer them a wide range of seeding grasses and salad vegies (not lettuce) Do you feed your canaries on egg and biscuit mix when they have young ones?

I don’t breed canaries, they are considered pets. But later next year I would like to try, so I will put some nesting material and a nest.

Right now I have a good seed mix, they are eating chop with different ingredients, they eat egg food (soft, yellow) during moulting season and offered once every two weeks the other months, and they like to munch on millet and seed stick as a treat. Last week I also sprouted some chia seed in a “sprout cake” that I offered them today. I recently added Harrison pellets to their diet and they seem to enjoy them, but since I don’t have stores I have to buy that and overpay for shipment, making the cost the double of the product’s actual price.

Here is kinda difficult to have someone that sell fresh grasses with seeds. I have to sprout my own too…

Anyone that have experience with the Hagen Tropican? They are supposed to be super good as they have banana and orange flavour.

I also know something about this NutriBird extruded pellets? I know in US it’s not known but here are sold in specialised pet stores. Any feedbacks on that one?

I grow my own seeding grasses. The easiest way to do this is to put a little bird seed in a pot and water, do this every 3 or 4 days for a couple of weeks. This will give you a constant supply. In my opinion bird seed is much better than pellets for small birds. But each to their own preferences. Fruit is not a natural food for canaries, which seeding grasses are, hence my preference for feeding this. When breeding it is best to offer 2 nests per hen, so the lady can have a choice. (We ladies like that.) A selection of grasses and feathers (most birds prefer white - though no one seems to know why) are the best nesting materials to offer. However shreaded tissues are also popular. Someone else will probably chime in a bit later.

So is it ok to sprout seeds like I did on the chia? Just a pot with damp paper towel and seeds on top? Or what do you use?

Basic Guide to Sprouting Seeds:
Rinse seed with water.
Soak seed in a jar or a bucket for 24 hours in twice the amount of water as you have seed. ...
Drain the water and rinse seed.
Put the seed in trays or buckets lined with paper towels. ...
Pat dry the seed.
Keep seed in a cool place which is out of the sun.

In Australia, most people pick seeding grasses fresh from their garden or a local park, almost nobody buys them.
