I grow lettuces in pots for the birds. 3 or 4 per pot and then let them go to seed.
stars & gouldians demolish a plant each day. the other half says I spend more time growing food for the birds than I do for her kitchen

the lettuces can be grown all year. all I do is wrap some clear plastic around some garden stakes to keep them warm & they seem to grow well.
