All I do is put it in the oven and bake it. No particular time.
I then simply put the 1/2 shells out and let them nibble the edges
It gives them something to do.
I wish I knew what the attraction is for the Gouldians, they go directly down to any egg shell
you put in the aviary even if there is still some from the previous placement.

Hi Ray,Ray Johnstone wrote:Hi, I believe I need to have eggshell available to the finches. Baked for 20min and crushed. How fine do I have to crush them. Thanks, Ray.
In addition to what the others have added regarding shell grit and cuttlefish I give my gouldians raw egg shells (from trusted organic source) with some of the white still in the shell....I only leave it in the aviary for 1 day (in winter) and 6 hours in summer.
Some here will bang on about the bacteria, etc but I can honestly say it is my birds most preferred food item....they are all jumping on the wire when they see me walk into the walk way of my aviary when I have the egg shells.....they don't even get that exited about seedling grass and other fresh greens i give them.
Cheers
Paul
