Just reading about birds that are male on one side and female on the other.
Freaky bit of genetics there!

Here is a half-sider Gouldian finch

This story on a half-sider chook explains it well.

Like this bilateral gynandromorphism in this Northern Cardinal, I don't remember I have ever seen bilateral gynandromorphism in captivity, and I'm glad I haven't! It's not a desirable trait, anyhow you wouldn't know if it's male or a female or neither!

Only ever seen pics of them. While I was watching the clip of the gouldian I noticed the deeper purple around the chest area on the "hen side" especially close to where the purple changes to yellow, which I thought a bit strange, made me think the bird could have slightly more male genes, however after reading the article it seems each cell has a sexual identity so I guess that could be possible. Interesting stuff.

A few years ago I bred A Gouldian cock which was White-breasted on one side and normal on the other. Not technically a half sider and the bird produced young (it turned out to genetically split White-breasted).

Many years ago there was a Half-sided Eclectus Parrot in Ballarat known as "Half-penny" , Green one side, red & blue the other. It never reproduced.
