Hi I am thinking of breeding my own mealworms. Can someone tell me if they smell, stink or worse and do they attract vermin etc. Thanks Mick.

I agree.

If you have a sensitive nose you may detect an ammonia-like smell if the media (oats/bran) is left unchanged for a long time, allowing the excreta to build up....although when changing the media there is a good chance that you will be throwing out a large volume of eggs, so sifting and replacing the fine tailings into the new media will preserve those. A sealed but well ventilated system is the way to go.

There is no reason for your Mealworms to smell at all especially if you use the weekly or less sieving method.
Should you do the old method of layers of Bran and Hesian then you still shouldn't have a problem.
When the dust in the bottom builds up just remove the top 150mm,put it aside then ditch the rest as
it is not worth keeping. Just put the medium and Mealworms back and away you go again.
