I would like to have a finch inside the house mainly for the chirping. I have a cage that measures 48cm x 30cm x 45cm high.

I have tried a Zebra but it was too flighty whenever we walked too close. Which finch would you recommend?

As Ian says, or Bengalese if they are to your taste. Often it will boil down to an individual bird's character as in any 'docile' breed some are more skittish than others. These two are both chirpers...no real song to speak of.
I was in a local pet shop recently and noticed only a couple of Gouldians for sale...when I asked if they ever stocked other finches, I was told that the Gouldians were the only finches that didn't go completely berserk when noisy kids got too close to the cages.... this surprised me as it was something that I hadn't considered before.

Avairys are best for most finches as they really like privacy and space. But for an indoor songbird, try a canary or Java finch.

Where are you located Dave?

You could try a goldfinch mule, great song bird.

Ahh, a number of the bird shops here in Sydney have Mules(Goldfinch x Canary) for sale, normally about 70.00 a bird, ask around your nearest dealers.

Anyone from SA on here know of any?
