Hi,

Can anyone please tell me if this little guy is a normal or a pied Ruddy?

Can't see any white feathers. ..maybe dark feathers due to poor diet?

Ok so pied means it would have white feathers. Didn't know that. Thanks.

Diet is good. He is very active he and the Mrs are building a nest. The first one since I got them about 3 months ago.

Its hard to get a good idea from that pic with the strong sun behind him. If he has paler pink patches on the head/neck/rump area he could be a light pied. If you show a pic in softer light it would be easier to tell. Pieds usually show at least some white feathers on the belly, wing flights or tail although on the head & neck on males any pied markings are at least partially overshadowed by the red.

Most likely a normal one. Pied finches usually have white feathers and your finch only has tiny white spots on the feathers not a whole white feather.
Have a nice day!

The well-focused areas look quite normal, but it is not easy to comment on the lateral rump and tail, (the out-of-focus areas).
