Wet beds?

When I change the water each day in the BFPF cage (one pair on their own) the water container has some of the nesting material inside, too much to have blown in there accidentally. Is this a normal thing for them to do? There is a nesting box in the cage but no eggs yet.

I often have bedding/bits of grass in my water bowls. I have watched my birds and they deposit the material in there. I assume its to soften it / make it more pliable when building the nest?

I have read that song sparrows do this regularly? maybe others do too.

My societies are definate bedding washers. They leave all sorts of things in there to soften. They are smarter than we give them credit for.

Thats what I was thinking too, but the other pair of BFPF dont do it so I wasnt sure. I think they must be emptying the nestbox with the amount of wet bedding I throw away every day

Dont know about finches but the parrots will soak themselves to adjust humidity in the nest box , just a theory.

I thought about that too, was hoping to see eggs soon after that thought, but still nothing.

My Bengos are also very into washing their bedding. Clean little things. Don;t know who does it in the main avairy, but obviously other finches are also into doing the washing.

Parrots do it to humidify the nest before the chicks hatch to soften the shells also my balkanise do it as welll to soften the material.
