As mentioned on here,Red Siskins are being exported back to their place of origin to help re-establish the local populations.Does anybody have any information on this regarding whether they are released back into the wild or whether they are aviary bred there.Just seems odd to me,i know that if one of my finches here were to get out, they would not survive.Being aviary bred, would they be able to find food etc and be safe from predators?.Curious to know.

The project is well underway with the Smithsonian heavily involved.
There is research being done to try and create a set of protocols with regard captive breeding.
An Australian contingent is currently headed up by Mike Fidler.
There are already breeding facilities located in their natural range
To my knowledge no Siskins have been exported.
It is in the Cities Red book which basically means no international trade in this specie.

E.Orix,do you think that they will breed and release aviary bred birds back into their native habitat?.Also ,the breeding program that we have here,is it of any benefit to overseas birds if we are not exporting or is it just to save them here.Sorry for the questions,my knowledge on this is miniscule.

The target is captive breed and release them in their natural location.
Birds bred here are not the target for export.
The birds are being used to assist in creating a protocol on management.
