Have been making steady progress wth these birds. Have produced my first yellow fawn which is colouring up nicely. Weather is a bit unfavourable for chasing the birds around the aviary at the moment, but will endeavour to do so when it is a lot cooler.

Hi Gary
really amazing birds, great job!
Are you sure the yellow one is just fawn+yellow and nothing else? I ask this because yellow mutation is known also in many other grassfinches, it turns red into yellow and leaves black and brown untouched, but in your birds (fawn+yellow) the the fawn in the back is strongly reduced, that is in my view a completely unexpected and surprising result for such a combination.
ciao

Hi Dimar,in the normal painted the back is not brown,it is a wash of brown and red and therefore when fawn is introduced the back colour fades to a more pinkish colour.
In the yellow mutation the back has a brown yellowish wash through the brown and when the fawn is introduced,it becomes a sandy colour. The black on the chest stays relatively black for some reason, where in most fawns it turns to chocolate brown, hence my theory dilute backed mutation. Craig
