Hi,

I've got a pair on the nest for about 13 days now and I'm eager to see what's in the nest, but I'm unsure if they tolerate nest inspection.

Thanks
Aidan.

What sort of birds are you talking about?
Are they in an aviary or indoor cage?
How much time do you spend around them?

Blue Faced P/Fs. They’re in an aviary, and I usually spend 30-60 mins around them a day, although I try to limit that in the breeding season.

They will tolerate nest inspection; but you cannot increase clutch size, or change anything by intrusion, so practise a bit of self-discipline

At thirteen days the eggs may not yet have hatched, although you did mention in another post that you found a dead youngster on the floor

If they are still brooding and returning to the box at night, all is well . .

And sooner or later you will hear them being fed, which will reassure you further

However, if they are not still brooding, you may well have concerns

Under normal circumstances I would say have a look in the nest from a distance (a couple of feet away). However, if they are abandoning the nest then don't disturb them.

Only problem is that I'm extremely short for 12 and the nest is 1.7m off the ground so my best bet is holding my camera with flash on inside the nest. I tried yesterday, but the nest (in an old, half-open plant pot) is too dark, and they returned to the nest later with no fuss.

OK . . Now let them 'do their thing' without any further 'help'

Patience young man. I too get frustrated when they insist on building above my head. Easily done in view of my tendancy to be close to the ground. :innocent: But most birds do best being given lots of greens and peace and quiet.

I go by the rule, give everything, rearing and incubating and extra week before looking, but then if all seems too quiet, then something is not right
Then I grab the ladder sitting up the side of the aviary and have a peak in with the torch
Thanks

Buy an endoscope for your mobile, many different lengths cable available.
Birds usually are not scared of this.
