So I have a pair of normal King Quail split to dunno but they throw normal , Cinnamin and Silver .
Consistantly throwing up to 13 young with on average 1 loss .
OK then I have this other pair 1 Silver and 1 Cinnamin who lay as frequently as the split pair but rarely get more than 2 or 3 young to maturity from about 6 or 7 eggs maximum .
Both pairs are the same age , same food , same flooring material etc etc just different aviaries ....no reason for there to be a difference in hatch rates etc .
So Im thinking could it be that having 2 mutation birds together may be making them a bit retarded in the breeding dept ? Any ideas ?
Could being mutations be weakening my Quail?

We had two silvers together who seemed to lay and never hatch any young....... They were only about 2 years old!
So retarded might be right? lol
Our brown and silver seem just fine at hatching their babies!

Since I started keeping them I've had me in just about every combination of the three (the only ones available in Aus), and no problems... Silver to cinnamon reared the same as cinnamon to normal and normal to normal and silver to normal, but my silver pair outdid the lot with a personal record of 28 youngsters fledged from one nest.

Think it is just the luck of the draw Deb. All birds/people etc. vary in fertility. Some pairs could populate a small country, while some seem to have very low fertility. Mother has a Silver cock x Cinnamon hen who produce 5/8 chicks without fail, then while the dad is weaning them mum lays again. 50/80 chicks a year. While the Silver hens we got from Flap (sorry mate) have both laid 2 rounds of eggs without hatching a single egg. 1 with a young 1st time cock and 1 with an older experinced cock. We are hoping they just let the eggs cook or cool.
