Hi everyone
I'm currently building an aviary at home and was wondering what plants are safe (non-toxic) for finches? I have leopard trees, bromeliads, palms, mock oranges and canna lillies. Are any of these dangerous? And could you recommend others?
Cheers
Wes

Hi , depends on how big an aviary your talking about building, preferably ones that dont attract mice or give them a safe haven. The bromiliads hold water if its what i am thinking of , as it could be a drowning hazard, not to sure on the other plants that you have as I have no idea on a leopard tree, if its bleeds a white sap I would tend to leave it out ...
In Mine I have various grasses , erimophilas , grevillias ,saltbushes, blue bush ,tee tree, westringias, agonis nanna's ,native wysterias and roses . always take into account the actual size of the end product, just so you dont have to keep prunning it. I also have some orchids in one at present... pete

Generally, natives are safe & not toxic. Most poisonous plants I know of are exotics. Broms may be attractive when first planted but will soon be covered with droppings including in the water well which would be a hazard. I have leopard trees in my yard & they are about 15m high - far too big for most aviaries. Smaller leafed native shrubs with a mature size of 2m or less (plenty to pick from here) and perennial seeding grasses make the best finch aviary plants.
