My own personal experience with them is very limited at this point in time. I'm very fond of them though, despite the scars.

Seem pretty common in Zoological institutions. Not sure about private aviculture. Perhaps one of our softbill enthusiasts could shed more light on that aspect.

Interesting, rails tend to be regarded as shy, and difficult to observe in the wild. However, the Guam Rails we bred were among the most fearless birds I've seen. True, they were captive born (but not hand raised) but it went beyond that. They would leap up at the screening topping their holding pen when a keeper appeared, and one had to shoo the birds away when putting down a food dish, or risk several stabs to the hand.
