Was doing the rounds this morning and stumbled across the nest below.
Doesnt look like a typical nest in brush.
The other birds I have in this aviary are goulds, ruddies and OBs...Does it look like a nest they would build? or could this be my newly purchased painteds at work.
the rest are cup nesters.
I dont have time recently to sit and see though I am curious..
I have never seen a nest built with so much firm grass and twigs. it is lined with feathers.
painted nest???

not sure if its a good thing or not though.....
My birds dont have much colour as they are only a few months old...
How young can they reasonably start breeding I wonder...
Haven't seen them around the nest too often though when I am at work they seem to add to it.
Hope they breed as they are fast becoming my favourite aussie finch

if its ruddies it would be that rooster you sold me at the last finch meeting in Wollongong.SamDavis wrote:My vote goes to Ruddies then maybe OBs but the entrance might be a bit big for OBs. Looks way too tidy for Painteds.
He is 2/3 coloured up so may be a little young......The OBs you gave me were more mature though it as you mentioned doesnt seem like an ob nest.
An egg was laid in it this morning ( I peered in during my weekly clean up)
resembles a zeb egg

And the winner is painteds!
I thought the OBs were the owner as I caught them in the act getting funky...they then moved on the fluff up a nest that I previously though belonged to one of my cup nesters.
I then noted the painted "renovating" before climbing in....as for my female ruddy...I haven't seen her in awhile and hope she is on eggs and not dead.
So it seems I have a nest of TCPFs, OBs and painteds....not too bad just hope they all hatch healthy
