Can anyone confirm that they or any other finches were legally imported in the 90's?
I do not know about the 90's but people would be surprised at what is tucked away.
I was shown some Lavenders(red tailed race) a year or so ago.
These very rare species are hidden because of the chance that they will be stolen.
It's not generally the people who are shown them that break in but bird people talk and people listen.
Over the last 10 years or so I have had three breakins, I doubt if all were done by visitors going by their methods.
Each time I improve my protection so you live in hope.
What worries me is some of the birds should have been quite traceable yet never appeared and were not that expensive out of Aust. or NZ

No finches were EVER legally imported into Australia during the 1990s. NONE NEVER.
Articles can be wrong. Don't believe everything you read in the newspapers! The guy with the lutino blue-and-gold macaw stated he was a newcomer in ABK: the son of a father with one of the biggest parrot collections in the country! That got through into print without even a "?".
No, only budgerigars, parrots, pigeons, kiwi, penguins to my knowledge came through Spotswood. Definately no finches.

A glyph of harsh words Uraeginthus, I wouldn't be so sure and certainly would not discuss things I don't know!
Not everything that is imported legally is advertised!
Finches were never approved for import through Spotswood. The species risk assessments for them had not even been written when live bird imports were ceased.
I will check with my work (which is the department that deals with the policy (DAFF- Dept Ag, Fish and Forests) although the actual importing is outsourced to States- although through AQIS which is also within my Dept), but we will still have records. I did read ALL the risk assessments for importing foreign finches in the 90s.
What actually was imported was not equal to what was allowed, particularly with finches, just because the cost wasnt worth it. But im pretty certain Orange cheeks were. I didnt think any other finches were, in the end. Also I did my honours (1997) on amazon parrots, caiques, and macaws that Were imported and knew a few importers as a result, at that time. But if you really want to know you could just ask my department and they should respond.
I have no records from my memory, notes and references of any lavenders being realistically mentioned after 1980, but it is possible someone was still breeding them. Lavenders do look pretty amazing up close and perhaps the photos dont do them justice. Artists plates do better justice ie in Clement et al. 1993 "Finches and Sparrows'' 1993.
