 My son tells me that as he was walking through the railway paddock on his way home that he was attacked by magpies ( must have been 15 he says  ) so he picks up a bloody big stick and takes a swipe at them.
Eveready Mr Policeman who was checking out what he was doing in private land then informs him that taking a swipe at Magpies can cost him a $560.00 fine  .
Thank goodness he wasnt fined coz you know who would be paying for it.
I reckon over the years I might have booked up about $193 848 377 000 worth of fines for whacking hte mongrel things

yes i can sympathize with you deb there, working for aussie post has its hazards . the maggies this time of the year are the worst. the rangers have to treat every bit of flora and fauna the same whether it be a pest of some sort or not . the fines are basically to deter the the little so and sos from inflicting damage to native animals and birds. we had a guy a few years ago take to one with a tennis racket on one of our main roads , he copt a fine for it , this thing was a pest the day before it took a chunk out of his neck. aussie post did pay the fine and called in a sharp shooter, but as we have found not in all cases when you take one out another appears. calm over here dont have a problem with removing the real nasty ones, but someone has to get hurt first. but what really pis@@@ me off is the people that feed them , especially red meat have you seen a maggie catch and kill a cow... it seriously screws them up in the head let along causes a premature death from rickets.. well i have had my say........pete

So true poiita about feeding them red meat it seems to mutate them and make them grow to humungus sizes.
Poor old postie here gets 2 outed every day and the buggers can outrun him on his little red bike.
They have gotten worse over the years and seem to be aiming for the eyes these days where as once upon a time a clip up the back of the head was all to expect.
Myself have no respect for the horrible things since being concussed by one at a footy game in my teens , the humiliation has left me traumatised
All the effort in preserving them and then in the end council usually ends up shooting them anyway.
They are shocking here at the moment and the Muddies arent much better in fact any thing black and white and feathered is a source of worry here

much prefer being swooped by a magpie than a plubber ( or whatever the real name is )
those mongrels used to nest at a golf course and for three months a year playing golf was a matter of survival. damn things must have weighed 5 to 8 kg even an umbrella was no good as a defense, most of us walked around armed with the biggest golf club we had ready to swing at any thing flying toward us

How many I wonder, of these birds have been tourmented into attacking people.I remember as a kid ,a mate and myself would spend hours taumenting a family of these birds. We would load up with rocks etc and get in a position in the cyprus trees where they could not get us  .So i guess i am guilty of training killer postie birds. And to all the posties that delivered mail on our road 30 years ago I apoligise for their trauma  .
I do believe some people, are a little responable for making these birds dangerous. But we are not allowed to stone people here,So you will never stop kids from taumenting these birds. And then some poor kid comes along and looses an eye or something. So what do we do,The only thing we can.Remove all the problem birds.

:? Guilty here also Gomer , gotta admit to climbing into the ammunition reserve armed with sticks and stones and tormenting them just for fun .....but SHEESH that was 30 years ago  do these buggers hold grudges for that long :?:
And yeah even I wouldnt take on those Plubber things with that razor sharp spur on its feet .
Anyhow for $560.00 worth of fines I wont be even looking mean at them
