I agree with you Kevin that sometimes the most useful thing these local mixed clubs do is introduce a group of like interest people who can then have their own informal meetings/get-to-gethers at times and places that suit them. Our local club has had a very successful Budgie spin-off group that way. Because the knowledgeable are willing to nurture the newcomers. Unfortunately it isn't working that way with the local finchos. Maybe I should try again. Keep telling me how it can work and you will get me fired up for the next attempt.
Suspect that there isn't anyone else on this forum who is from round my postcode area but in case, it is 6530

If you could get it going, It would be good for the finchos in your local area Im sure. The distance to travel is always a killer. Our bird club covers a triangle area of 150 kms,So some times its a bit of travelling to the monthly meeting, if your not working.

we have very strong importation laws for good reason. even zoos find it almost impossible to import species and are having all sorts of troubles with inbreeding in this country.
but of all teh different types of animal - i don't think we should be overly concerned in regards to importation of birds - good quarantine procedures are a must - but really, so many of our native birds migrate between here and southeast asia that when it comes to avian disease migration we are right on the route.
birds are about the one biological element of australia where the "isolated island continent" policy goes out the window.

Good point Toothless
So busy protecting against "nasties"
that we forget that nature is quietly doing her thing and ignoring our border rules.
Our local bird club, being located on the coast, encompases a semi circle with a diameter of about 125km. And Yes the more outlying members do travel more, but meetings rotate round members homes, so everyone gets a chance to show off their birding set up.

that sounds like a really good set up finchbreeder.....would be good to have a meeting near me for a change
...I guess the problem is if you have a lot of members its gets a bit much for some people ..to have meetings at their house......but id like that method.
I tried to get some support for another branch of our club near me but was told (&*#@$%&&*^in no uncertain terms.......ah well
I saw it as expanding the organisation.....others saw it as dividing and diluting it...might have to happen one day though
anyway...as long as i can go home and perv on me birds im happy
