Have a pr of red siskins that appear to be chewing the cane nest cup.

Has anyone experienced this and know what they are doing?

The dismantle the started nests, but the cock is feeding the hen and singing and carrying on but yet to build.

I haven't experienced this and I've never kept red siskins but it doesn't sound harmful. I'd just naked sure there is stiffer nesting material available like coarse grass, coconut fibre etc in case that's what he is after.
O have lost finch legs on cane basket nests but my finches lover them so I always hand select the tightest weave ones and pack the bottom with thick layer of November grass. They perch on outside roof too though.
I'm trialing some rope like baskets atm.

Could it be mice chewing the nest? They have chewed through bits of skinny wood like masonite or mdf.

Hopefully your season goes well
