I use to leave my seed in during the day and discard it each evening (I threw it onto the vacant block next door and collected the seed heads a few months later once they had grown). The main thing I found was ensuring the seed was kept clean through the process. Using a cleaner to kill the bacteria in the water whilst the seed was soaking and rinsing the seed thoroughly until it was clean. If it didn't smell sweet, I chucked it. Not worth the risk.

As stated we all have our own take on sprouting seed!
I recycle 3l milk bottles, clean thoroughly then add approx 1kg of finch mix(a funnel is handy) and a splash of bleach and part-fill with water.
6-12 hours later drain off the water and find a warm spot for 24-36 hours to sprout.
When it chits(tiny shoots) its ready, i then give it a rinse, drain it off and pack into chinese food containers and into the freezer(that's what the freezer on a beer fridge is for 8-) !).
Fresh may be best but in my climate it soon defrosts when fed out(yes i feed it out frozen).Parrotfinches are especially keen and try to eat it frozen!!
If you have a lot of birds just get more milk bottles. Each bottle makes about 6 chinese food containers worth.
Your nose will let you know if its gone rancid or not!
The birds all seem to love it!
