HI all,

Went to young bird sale today and it was an interesting one.

The weekends started when we pulled into the RSL to watch the bunnies thump the dragons then watch Wigan cop a pounding.

The XXXX went down well to.

Following morning we hit the bird sale and for all the people that turned up hardly anyone sold birds.

There was only one bloke who sold out and he had euro goldfinches for $ 10 a piece courtesy of the big aviary in the sky.

Finch wise there were few species but good brids.

There was a bucket load of normal goulds selling from $ 20 a pr to $ 50 a pr.

One bloke had white eared masks or whatever they are and a heap of black headed nuns which I thought looked stunning.

If you were into parrots you could have snapped a bargain as they had heaps there. As no one was selling the prices became quite flexible.

Thought I would post some pics of the day.

Still one of my favorite small sales. Love getting away for the weekend and the sale has a relaxed feel to it. It was very well run.

$20 a pair for Gouldians is silly - way too cheap. Sounds like a bit of shame that more buyers didn't show up as that doesn't sound real good for their future sales.

Thanks for the photos and see you at Orange.

I also went along and was a seller for the first time there. I think I may have spoken to you elferoz777 about Alfs birds when you were taking photos and you may have asked me about blue gouldians.
Sorry if it was you I only thought about it on the drive home.

It was a really good sale last year and upon arrival today I thought it was going to be the same but when the sellers were told to head to the front door to head back into the hall it was evident that the sellers outnumbered the buyers waiting to enter. It was a tough day for selling birds I ended up getting a couple pairs away but it took a lot of time. I didn't have to reduce prices which I was happy about. The Gouldians I knew of started at $40 a pair and they couldn't sell them no interest at all. one bloke ended up snapping up about 10 pairs and paying between $20 and $30 a pair which is a bit of a shame.

The trade was way down from last year too with about half the amount which was also disappointing (it didn't stop me spending money still)

Alf Watts black headed nuns were really good looking birds black almost all the way down I am fairly sure he is heading to Orange if not I'm sure I could give you his details if you don't find some there. He is coming to the Canberra sale in March I know that much so something could be organised anyway E Orix

A few finches I noticed were: singers, diamonds, black nuns, white masks, masks, longtails, diggles, parsons, parrot finches red, blue and tri, gouldians, painteds, st helenas, red brows, cordons, a melba cock, plumheads, goldfinches

If anything the best thing I got out of the day was making a few new mates that live close enough to Canberra to travel to see. I definitely enjoy the Young sale and I'm sure I'll head back next year.... sorry for the long rant also

I am surprised that the White Eared Masked finches were not snapped up very quickly!
As you stated, there could not have been many buyers (or licences) present for these beauties to remain unsold for too long.

The pair that didn't sell was a 3yr old pair that he had to move on.
I think he was pretty honest about it.

cheers

The only bloke who sold out was the guy selling $ 10 goldfinches.

I asked for a male and two hens and I am sure I have got three males. His sexing method is different to mine and less accurate I suspect.

I will still support the sale at young.

I think they could benefit from better PR.

For me it is a good get away with some mates, some XXXX and a good meal at the club.

I think most people sus out what is there and then wait till Orange.

I may be making Orange this year for the first time so it will be good to see what sells and what doesnt.
