I have put coconut fibre in for the gouldians, thinking that pretty much any finch would find it good for nesting. After reading a little on the net, it seems swap grass maybe needed? or will they accept the coconut fibre?
Thanks

Ill put it like this,
I had half my boxes last year lined with coconut fire and half with swamp/November grass.
The coconut fibre didnt even get a look in.
Swamp is the best as it is soft and light. Coconut fibre is better for larger finches such as canaries, siskins and goldfinches.

If you can't get swamp grass, just soft grass hay is good or leave the spent seeding grass heads in the aviary and i agree start off the nest for them by placing your grass in and use your fist to shape a cup shape in it.
Sort pieces of grass is useless imo, grass up to 300mm is best so they can weave a hood over the chamber. Cheers Craig

The coconut fibre is good as a base to fill up the corners of the nest with other softer grass on top of it. I use swamp grass on top ( this saves some of that precious swamp grass). They then use the seeding grasses I give them to finish the nest
